Appearance milestones for Scottish Touch superstars

Three of Scotland’s Mixed Open World Cup squad heroes reached personal career milestones during their sensational bronze medal winning campaign in Malaysia.

Mikey Short and Dan Fitzgerald gained their 100th international caps, and Marshall McLeod got his 50th.

Dan and Mikey have won every Home Nations (except for 2009) and European Championships they have competed in since 2007, which goes to show that the bronze medal won at the World Cup comes off the back of many years of hard work and dedication.

Dan started playing touch in New South Wales, and played junior representative touch there before moving over to Scotland. He started playing social touch in Aberdeen where he was scouted by Scottish Touch, and got his first cap as part of the mixed open squad in 2007.

Mikey has been playing touch internationally since 2006, when he was in the same squad as current mixed open coach Robbie McKenzie.  They both fell in love with the game, and decided to do everything they could to drive touch forward in Scotland.

There is no doubt that elite touch in Scotland would not be where it is today without their talent, knowledge, hard work and commitment to the sport.  Their contributions to all the squads they have been involved in over the years is invaluable.  The fact that they both travelled from Switzerland where they live (with their respective families, not together) to take part in squad training goes to show that they were prepared to do whatever it took to achieve success from themselves and the squad.

Marshall’s first international competition was the 2014 European Championships in Swansea, and the fact that he is only 22 (a decade younger than Dan and Mikey) gives him plenty of time to add to his already impressive medal and appearance haul.

Congratulations to Mikey, Dan and Marshall – we’re excited to see what you go on to achieve next!
