Ice Cool Edinburgh and Aberdeen clinch Nationals

Aberdeen Northern Lights cemented their place as the dominant force in ladies touch at the STA's 6th National Championships in Falkirk.

uploads/images/STANationals2012WomensWinners.jpgThe defending champions had broken Edinburgh's stranglehold on the event last year on home soil and this year they emphatically beat Glasgow 8-1 in the final - a scoreline that perhaps belies the effort of the runners up in getting their silver medals.  Edinburgh Flames edged out Stirling for third place 1-0.

In the Men's final a depleted Edinburgh Ice squad ensured that the title stayed in the capital, inheriting the crown from Flames.  With one title each since the franchises came into being, the nationals next year are sure to be hotly contested.  Ice beat a Stirling side featuring in their 4th consecutive final and yet again came away with second place.  It was a close match finishing 7-5 to Ice with Stirling pressing hard, especially in the second half for that elusive title.

The event provided a further landmark as Dundee fielded a mixed development side in the Women's division.  The team is a product of a new In2Touch league in Dundee and their players performed well, winning all their matches, and learned a lot from the experience.  It's hoped that this will pave the way for Dundee men's and women's teams taking part in next year's nationals.
