Martin Macari Passes Away
17 Feb 2017 @ 19:49 GMT
It is with huge sadness that Scottish Touch has learned today of the passing of Martin Macari after a long battle with cancer. He was 47.
Martin had an illustrious international career for Scotland, playing 65 times for his country, making him 7th in the overall list and 4th in European Championships, scoring a total of 18 touchdowns. He captained several senior sides, including the Mens 40s in Swansea that saw Scotland's first ever victory against England in the Yarrow Cup.
Martin gradually moved into coaching and in 2015 was appointed National Squad Director with a passion to improve the performance of Scotland's senior squads. At last year's European Championships in Jersey, Scotland's largest ever senior squad saw its best ever set of results. It is thanks to his legacy and vision that we now prepare to host Europe's first ever international Senior Touch Championship in Edinburgh.
In spite of Martin's illness, he continued to work hard behind the scenes, especially on the status of seniors in the sport. His passion, drive, energy and eternal sense of optimism will be missed by all of us both on and off the field.
Our thoughts are at this time with Martin's family and friends.
