Mixed Division wins help Scotland finish second overall in Swansea

The Mixed Open team's Championship win helped Scotland finish second overall at the European Championships in Swansea.

Coach Robbie McKenzie's Mixed Open squad won a well-fought final against England to take the trophy, winning 8-6.

Bronze medal wins for both the Men's and Women's Open sides secured Scotland second place in the Open Division overall.

The Mixed success continued in the Senior division - as Scotland beat England 8-5 in the Final.

The Women's 27's team finished in third place, seeing off Ireland 4-2 in the Bronze play-off.

Scotland took third place in the Senior Division overall, after the Men's 35's finished fourth, and the Men's 40's placed fifth.

The success follows the Under 18's third placed finish in the inaugural Junior European Championships, played in the days approaching the tournament.

STA President David Matthew was proud of the success.
He said:"To say I am really pleased with this year's Euro's and the achievements of our Scottish Touch squad is to understate my feelings.
"Going into any major tournament as current European Champions was always going to be a tough ask, particularly as we are re-building ahead of the 2015 Touch World Cup.
"To achieve Gold in the Mixed Divisions and Bronzes for Men & Women - not forgetting the U18 Mixed picking up Bronze too - was very good news indeed.
"The competition was very strong, particularly from our arch rivals England & Wales.
"So many congratulations to everyone involved, especially Kirsty Wheeler, our Tour Manager, and all the team managers, whose work behind the scenes often goes unnoticed - so many thanks to them.
"I was impressed with the enthusiasm, commitment and determination exhibited by our entire squad of players, referees, coaches, physios and managers and not forgetting our loyal band of supporters.
"That said, I was really pleased to watch the Mixed Open Final, when we retained our status of Europe's leading country in the Mixed Division: well done guys!
"I also want to applaud the work of our Scottish referees and wish to congratulate those who achieved upgrades."
