Scotland are the new Open Touch Champions of Europe after a spectacular double-gold medal performance in Treviso, Italy.

The Mixed Open final against England proved a close affair, not surprising given the Scots loss 6-5 to England in their pool match.  However, the team had clearly learned from that encounter, improving through the tournament and triumphed 9-6.

As reigning Mens Open champions, Scotland were tipped to retain their title but an earlier draw against England, showed that they had to be on their guard.  The match was again close with England holding the bulk of possession for long periods but a resolute defence and a more cutting edge in attack proved the difference in a 10-8 victory.  The turning point came after one such stand with Larry Irwin breaking through and running the length of the pitch for a touchdown.

Scotland’s senior sides also contributed with the Men’s Over 30 side also claiming a bronze with a stunning 7-1 win over Wales.

Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison, said: "In what has already been a great year for Scottish sport, this is yet another fantastic achievement. I saw at first hand the dedication, skill and athleticism of the players, coaches and managers when I attended the Touch World Cup last year so I am delighted to hear of our success.  I hope that this double win inspires more people to try out touch in Scotland."

David Bartlett, the Scottish Touch Association’s (STA) National Squad Director said: “The European Championships have been a fantastic success for the Scotland squad, with four of our five teams picking up medals.  It is a credit to all the hard work put in by the players, coaches, team managers and the physios from spaceclinics.com that we have done so well.  To have all bar one of our players in these finals fit to play after 5 days of tough competition may well have made the difference.”

STA President, Peter Faassen de Heer, paid tribute to the dedication of the squad.  “These players have committed to 9 months of hard training to realise their dream.  Their passion, drive and self-belief along with some of the best coaching in the game has got them here.  We want to use this moment to kick-start more development and participation in Touch both at the elite and social level.”
