Nationals lit up by Flames and Northern Lights

6 Sep 2011 @ 12:00 BST

The Fifth and most competitive STA National Championships yet took place at Balgownie Sports Ground in Aberdeen.

Nationals ChampionsWhile the Edinburgh Flames took the men's title with some blistering attacking play, it was the Aberdeen Northern Lights who made history by being the first side outside the capital to take either national title with victory in the women's competition.  A well-drilled team unit, the Northern Lights defence only conceded 2 touchdowns all day.

The day was marked by many close encounters - in fact 11 matches came down to one score or less but always in good spirit and showed off the growing strength of the game in Scotland at the elite level.  The tournament also provided selectors with a first opportunity to see contenders for the national squad in action with a number of newer players staking claims.

Leading the Edinburgh Flames team, Eddie Sanjuan became men's MVP for the day while Nicola Jobson from Glasgow took the women's MVP award.
