In memory of Simon Yarrow

8 Dec 2011 @ 22:30 GMT

It is with great sadness and deep shock that the STA announces the death of Simon Yarrow. Simon took his own life on Tuesday morning, 6 December 2011 after fighting depression for a number of months.

Simon YarrowSimon was one of the pioneers for Touch in Scotland, playing socially since the sport was introduced in 1993 in Edinburgh and his passion for the game extended to 32 caps for Scotland and 8 international appearances as a referee.  Simon loved to encourage and coach players into the game and he was a regular down at the local park in the Meadows as well as captain of a Scottish development side in the Massy Mainland Cup and latterly coach for the English Men's 40s team after moving to Cambridge.

Not content with involvement on the pitch, Simon also worked hard to promote the sport off it.  He helped run local Touch leagues in Edinburgh for several years and played a big part in the successful hosting of the 2006 Euros.

STA President, Peter Faassen de Heer commented: "This is a tragic loss to our sport.  I have personally known Simon for 15 years and have shared so many happy memories - his 'can do' attitude and dedication helped me and many others achieve our potential as players from the Meadows Maniacs team in the 90's, through the 2003 World Cup in Japan and the 2008 Euros in France.  As a referee, he had a great feel for the game - I lost count of the times players came and complimented him on his style - one that let play flow, people express themselves and have fun."

Simon's funeral will be held on Friday 16 December at the Holy Trinity Church in Knaresburgh at 13:30.  All welcome.  Simon's family are requesting no flowers, rather a donation to PADI Project Aware which was close to Simon's heart.
